What is included in a BYD service?

A BYD service includes many of the same practises conducted on traditional combustion-powered engines such as brake testing, washer fluid, and steering capabilities, but also includes battery checks, charging inspections, and software updates.

BYD servicing focuses on the unique needs of electric and hybrid vehicles rather than traditional engine maintenance. While our hybrid models contain the components consistent with internal combustion engines, there is the need for maintaining the elements that make a vehicle hybrid, such as the charging cable, and battery.

We spoke with BYD Exeter’s Service Manager Austin Bradford and BYD Plymouth’s Service Manager Ben Easton to find out exactly what happens in a BYD service.

BYD service delivery

BYD service process

Austin explained the process of a BYD service, as well as the importance of regular servicing:

“We have a specific strategy adhering to the recommended replacement intervals for certain parts. Our BYD-trained technicians carry out an inspection on everything they need to, then generate a Vehicle Health Check to report to the customer any items that may require attention. After this, we would replace any components that are needed to maintain the manufacturer’s service schedule.

“The importance of regular maintenance is to identify any issues or wear that may be developing, which prevent safety-related issues before they become serious. Completing the services in line with the manufacturer’s service schedule ensures that the fluids in the vehicle do not exceed their service life, and offer their full protection to the vehicle’s components, thus increasing longevity.

“Exceeding service intervals can invalidate warranty on components that use fluids with a service life. For example, brake fluid can cause braking issues if it exceeds its service life due to its hygroscopic nature, climate system filters can affect the air quality that enters the passenger compartment, and air filters, spark plugs, and fuel filters can all affect engine performance and efficiency.”

Brake checks

BYD service checks and maintenance

Ben explained the various checks that are carried out during a service, why these are necessary, and the importance of proper maintenance.

Battery health and longevity

The battery pack is the most valuable component of a BYD electric vehicle. Routine servicing checks things like cell balance, charging performance, and thermal management. Proper maintenance helps prevent premature degradation, extending the battery’s life and range.

Software and firmware updates

BYD often releases software updates that improve efficiency, fix bugs, or add new features. Servicing ensures your car’s firmware and control systems are up to date, which is essential for performance, charging compatibility, and safety.

Mechanical components

Even EVs have wear-and-tear parts like brakes, suspension, tyres, and steering systems. Regular inspections ensure everything remains safe and efficient. For example, regenerative braking reduces brake pad wear, but hydraulic systems still need checks.

Charging system and high-voltage safety

Technicians inspect the charging port, cables, and high-voltage connections for corrosion or damage. This helps prevent electrical faults, charging issues, or potential safety hazards.

Warranty protection

Regular servicing at approved intervals helps maintain your BYD warranty. Missing services or using unauthorised repairers might void certain parts of the warranty, especially related to the battery or drive system.

Breakdown cover renewal

When the maintenance schedule is adhered to, BYD renew the breakdown cover on a rolling basis, extending the two years free breakdown cover 12 or 24 months at a time, dependant on schedule requirements.
