We’ve listed some of the best places to spot dolphins right here in the South West, including Brixham, Ilfracombe, Torquay, Valley of Rocks, Salcombe, Burton Cliffs, and Plymouth Sound.
Berry Head, Brixham
A walk to Berry Head is always worth it, and not just for the chance of spotting dolphins. This stunning clifftop route offers sweeping views across Torbay and is ideal for anyone who enjoys a longer coastal walk. It’s dog-friendly too, making it perfect for a full family day out.
Bring your camera, as the views alone are impressive, but keep your eyes on the water and you might be rewarded with dolphins passing through the bay. You can park at the Berry Head National Nature Reserve car park and follow the clearly marked paths. If you need a break along the way, the Guardhouse Café is a great place to stop for a coffee or lunch.
Ilfracombe Sea Safari
For one of the best chances to see dolphins up close, heading out to sea is hard to beat. Ilfracombe Sea Safari offers a dedicated sea life spotting experience aboard a fantastic boat.
During the two-hour trip, the experienced and knowledgeable crew share fascinating local insights while giving you the best possible opportunity to spot dolphins in their natural habitat. It’s a memorable experience for wildlife lovers of all ages.
Labrador Bay, Torquay
Nestled between Shaldon and Torquay, Labrador Bay is a popular coastal stop-off and known dolphin spotting location. Dolphins are often seen breaching just offshore, especially during calmer summer days.
You can park at the Labrador Bay Nature Reserve car park, where there’s usually an ice cream van in the warmer months. If you’re in the mood for a longer walk, park in Shaldon and join the South West Coast Path. Follow the path past the small zoo and through the pitch-and-putt fields before reaching the cliffs, where the bay opens up below you.
Valley of Rocks, North Devon
Already a must-visit for anyone holidaying in Lynton and Lynmouth, the Valley of Rocks combines dramatic scenery with the chance to spot dolphins offshore.
Even if you’re not keen on long walks, the views are easily accessible from nearby car parks. Once you’ve soaked in the coastline, the surrounding towns and villages offer plenty more to explore, making this a great stop for a full day out.
Burton Cliffs, Burton Bradstock
Fans of Broadchurch will instantly recognise the iconic Burton Cliffs, which form part of the South West Coast Path and offer uninterrupted views across Lyme Bay.
It’s a fantastic spot for dolphin watching, and if you’re lucky, you may also catch sight of other marine life such as whales, sharks, and an abundance of seabirds. Pack a picnic, settle in, and enjoy the scenery while you wait.
Bolt Head, Salcombe
Just outside Salcombe, Bolt Head is a National Trust headland and a favourite viewpoint along the coast. The walk from Salcombe is relatively gentle, with manageable hills and beautiful views year-round.
Dolphins are more commonly seen during the warmer months, making summer the perfect time to visit. Whether you’re walking, picnicking, or simply taking in the sea air, it’s a peaceful and rewarding coastal escape.
Plymouth Sound
Plymouth Sound is a bustling stretch of coastline with plenty to do on and off the water, from boat trips and kayaking to fishing and waterfront walks.
During the summer months, dolphins and seals are frequently spotted playing in the Sound. With so many restaurants and bars lining the waterfront, you could even be enjoying a meal when dolphins make an unexpected appearance just offshore.
