BYD SEALION 7 vs Tesla Model Y

The BYD SEALION 7 is the fifth car to enter the UK market from BYD, and it’s certainly made a statement. One of the key competitors of the SEALION 7 is the Tesla Model Y, so we’re going to compare the two models to give you an insight into which model would suit your lifestyle better. We’ll be reviewing the Tesla Model Y 2025 facelift for a fair comparison. From performance to style, tech to charging, here’s our verdict on the BYD SEALION 7 vs Tesla Model Y.

Performance and power

The BYD SEALION 7 is equipped with a dual-motor in the Design and Excellence models, delivering 530hp and 680Nm of torque, allowing a 0-62mph speed of 4.5 seconds on the Excellence AWD trim. While it’s slightly heavier at 2,420kg, it offers a robust all-wheel drive experience and feels excitingly nippy.

The Tesla Model Y also offers a dual-motor set up, and produces 507hp and 494Nm of torque. Despite the lower power output, the Model Y is significantly lighter – just under 2,000kg – meaning it falls just behind the SEALION 7’s 0-62mph speed, coming in at 4.8 seconds on the Long Range AWD trim.

Battery and range

The SEALION 7 Excellence features a 91.3kWh battery with a range of up to 383 miles. The Comfort trim has a 82.5kWh battery, offering up to 392 miles, while the Design trim’s dual motor 82.5kWh battery offers a range of up to 373 miles.

The Model Y’s Long Range has a 63kWh battery, offering up to 331 miles, while the Long Range AWD trim’s 83kWh battery offers up to 373 miles, just matching the SEALION 7 on estimated range.

Interior and tech

As with all BYD models, the SEALION 7 has been praised for its premium interior with extensive leather, a spacious cabin, and a high-tech infotainment system. It includes BYD’s signature rotating touchscreen and a smart in-car interface.

Alternatively, the Model Y has opted to be minimalist and tech-forward, with a central touchscreen and clean design. The 2025 update adds a Cybertruck-style light bar and improved materials.

The SEALION 7 feels more luxurious, while the Model Y leans toward futuristic simplicity.

Price and value

UK pricing for the SEALION 7 starts at £46,990 for the Comfort trim, rising to £58,990 for the Excellence.

Model Y pricing naturally varies by spec, but the Long Range model typically starts around £44,990 in the UK, going up to £52,000 for the Long Range AWD.

The SEALION 7 offers more features as standard, making it a sound financial investment without the need to pay for add on features.

Brand and ecosystem

Tesla offers a mature EV ecosystem, including the Supercharger network, over-the-air updates, and a strong resale market, largely due to its longevity in the electric car industry. However, with BYD taking over Tesla’s sales at the start of 2025, and its rapid expansion and strong product launches, it’s safe to say BYD is on its way to becoming the leader in EV products.

If you’re looking for a stylish, tech-rich SUV with strong performance and great value, the BYD Sealion 7 is a compelling alternative to the Tesla Model Y. A luxurious model with great stats, the SEALION 7 is unique in its standing as an electric SUV coupe.
