BYD SEAL: Our Review

For the seasoned car review reader, you may be used to revelling in reviews of big litre V8-engined cars, with observations regarding the experience of the throaty engine, dreamy acceleration, and experiential cabin. The BYD SEAL is the electric version of that.

Experiencing the future

Hands down, my favourite thing about the SEAL is the experience. The culmination of the luxury seats, interactive cabin, low stance, and responsive acceleration – and yes, it’s incredibly responsive – is an experience I believe every driver should have at least once. Of course, cars are a practical solution to the need for travelling, but why shouldn’t they also provide exhilaration and joy?

Many people liken electric cars to ‘space ships’, critiquing the spacious cabins and silent acceleration, but in a car like the SEAL, these attributes add to the thrill. A 0-62mph of 3.8 seconds, the lack of engine noise allowing you to hear the tyres gaining speed on the tarmac, and the smooth transition from a standstill to 70mph on the dual carriageway can’t be criticised – BYD are bringing the thrill of driving sporty cars into the electric vehicle remit.

Impressive technology

The BYD SEAL has the advantage of an impressive Intelligent Torque Adaption Control (iTAC) system, developed exclusively by BYD, for exceptional handling and stability. This is very apparent when it comes to those winding Devon roads, with the wheels gripping the floor as you manoeuvre around bends and curves.

The BYD SEAL is the first vehicle to implement BYD’s highly advanced Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology BYD SEAL which fully integrates the Blade Battery into the entire vehicle structure. This adds unprecedented levels of safety, torsional rigidity, elite driving dynamics and extra space for passengers to enjoy – all things you can notice in comparison to other saloons in the market, particularly the traditional fuel-powered models.

Luxury interior

The SEAL’s interior has been well-thought out; the materials are high quality, leaving no doubt that this car has been made with comfort and luxury in mind. The premium feel coupled with the Ocean-themed design features makes it unmistakably a BYD, and there are certain aspects that I’ve never thought about before that make driving even dreamier, such as the anti-glare rear-view mirror as standard, and four-way adjustable lumbar support.

An impressive panoramic sunroof adds even more space and dimension to the inside of the car, the influx of extra light making it feel like you’re driving an executive saloon you could only dream of.

Conclusion

As with all BYD models, the safety and assistance features are second to none, making driving that little bit more comfortable knowing you have trust in the vehicle. The brand’s iconic rotatable touch screen is a lovely touch in the SEAL, with the horizontal position adding an extra level of aerodynamics, albeit only as a placebo effect.

The SEAL is a true dream to drive, incredibly enjoyable as a passenger, and a must-drive for anyone who appreciates the thrill of responsive touch and mature handling.
