Battle of the compact EVs, who comes out on top?
The electric vehicle (EV) market is expanding rapidly, with automakers introducing innovative and exciting models to cater to the growing demand. In this comparison, we examine two noteworthy contenders: the BYD Dolphin and the CUPRA Born.
Both vehicles are compact hatchbacks positioned at a similar price point, offering a glimpse into the future of urban mobility. Let’s dive into the specifics and see how these two EVs stack up against each other.
Model details
The BYD Dolphin is a sleek, compact hatchback designed to make electric driving accessible to a broader audience. With its futuristic design and impressive feature set, it aims to provide a balanced blend of efficiency, performance, and affordability.
There are four trim levels to choose from: Active, Boost, Comfort, and Design. Although only two are currently available in the UK at the moment, we can expect the smaller battery trims to launch by the end of this year.
In terms of colours, you can choose from Urban Grey, Cream White, Coral Pink, Space Black, and Amethyst Purple. But if you opt for the top of the range Design trim, you get two-tone colours such as Atlantis Grey and Jet Black, Surfing Blue and Urban Grey, Coral Pink and Urban Grey, and Skiing White and Urban Grey.
On the other hand, the CUPRA Born is CUPRA’s first all-electric vehicle, symbolising the brand’s sporty and dynamic approach to electrification. Built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, the Born promises a thrilling driving experience coupled with advanced technology.
You get five trim levels, the V1, V2, V3, VZ, and VZ First Edition. CUPRA also offer plenty of optional packs if you want more safety systems, or technology, a better sound system or a sunroof for example.
There are six colours on offer, so you can drive away in a CUPRA Born with Aurora Blue, Glacial White, Geyser Silver, Quasar Grey, Rayleigh Red, or Vapor Grey paintwork.
Design and Interior
The BYD Dolphin features a contemporary design with smooth curves and a distinctive front fascia that highlights its electric identity. Inside, the Dolphin offers a modern, minimalist cabin with high-quality materials and an intuitive layout. The spacious interior provides ample headroom and legroom, ensuring comfort for all passengers.
The CUPRA Born, meanwhile, exudes a sportier aesthetic with aggressive lines and bold styling cues. Its interior is equally striking, featuring sporty seats, a driver-focused cockpit, and premium finishes that emphasise its performance-oriented character.
Technology
Both vehicles come equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to enhance the driving experience and ensure safety. The Dolphin is equipped with BYD’s latest infotainment system, featuring a large touchscreen display, smartphone integration, and a suite of driver-assistance features. It also benefits from BYD’s expertise in battery technology, promising reliability and longevity.
The CUPRA Born, on the other hand, boasts an advanced infotainment system with a high-resolution display, seamless connectivity options, and a host of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and more.
Drive/Performance
In terms of performance, the BYD Dolphin offers a smooth and efficient driving experience with its electric powertrain delivering ample torque for city driving. Its compact size and responsive handling make it a breeze to navigate through urban environments. The CUPRA Born, however, takes performance up a notch with a more powerful electric motor and a sport-tuned suspension. It promises a more engaging drive with brisk acceleration and precise handling, appealing to those who enjoy a spirited driving experience.
Electric Range and Charging
Range and charging capabilities are critical considerations for EV buyers. The BYD Dolphin boasts a respectable electric range of up to 265 miles, making it suitable for daily commutes and weekend trips. It supports fast charging, reducing downtime and enhancing convenience.
The CUPRA Born offers a competitive range as well, with up to 342 miles of range depending on which trim you opt for. If you go for the V1 trim, you get a lower 264 miles, but this is still pretty decent. It also features rapid charging capabilities, ensuring drivers can quickly get back on the road.
Space and Practicality
Despite their compact dimensions, both vehicles are designed to maximise interior space and practicality. The BYD Dolphin provides a roomy cabin with flexible seating arrangements (60:40 split) and a 345 litre boot, making it a practical choice for small families and urban dwellers. There’s also decent storage space in the door bins, glovebox, and under the central arm rest.
The CUPRA Born, while sportier in nature, doesn’t compromise on practicality. It offers a spacious interior with ample storage solutions, catering to the needs of active lifestyles. There’s a 60:40 split on the rear seats, the same as the Dolphin.
