Our Winter days out recommendations
There’s no time like in December to get out and enjoy the festivities that many places have to offer.
Sometimes the Winter months are the best time to have a day out somewhere because they tend to be less crowded.
Here’s six places we’d recommend for a Winter day out.
Saint Michael's Mount
Winter (we think) is the best time to visit Saint Michael’s Mount!
It’s during a period where entry is free to all visitors, it’s a lot quieter and you can cosy up at the Island Café or Harbour Loft for a hot drink and pastry.
Even the island tours are free during Winter, and it’s the perfect time to do a bit of Christmas shopping.
One of the downsides is walking is the only way to visit the island at this time of year, so it’s important to check their opening times as it’ll all depend on what time low tide is, which lasts for about four hours.
The Eden Project
The Eden Project in Cornwall is a fantastic winter destination. Explore the iconic biomes, which house the largest indoor rainforest in the world, and enjoy seasonal events and activities.
The Mediterranean biome is particularly inviting during the colder months but they’re putting on a lights and soundscape experience on selected evenings which turn the biomes into a twinkling wonderland.
Tintagel
Steeped in Arthurian legend, Tintagel is a magical place to explore.
Visit the ruins of Tintagel Castle, walk across the dramatic footbridge, and take in the rugged coastal scenery. A wintery mist can add an extra layer of mystique to this historic site.
We would recommend buying your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
Plymouth Aquarium
The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the largest in the UK and a perfect indoor activity for a chilly day.
Discover a variety of marine life, from local species to exotic creatures, and enjoy interactive exhibits that are fun for all ages.
If you’d like to pay a bit extra, you could even snorkel or feed the turtles. The aquarium also offers a sleepover with the sharks – perfect for a Christmas present?
Killerton
Experience the magic of Christmas at Killerton, a National Trust property in Devon. The estate is adorned with festive decorations, including lush garlands and sparkling trees.
Inside Killerton House, enjoy scenes of Christmas games, afternoon tea, and carol singing. The gardens feature a winter trail with interactive activities like designing Christmas cards and festive shows. Warm up with hot chocolate and mince pies from the Stables Coffee Shop or Killerton Kitchen Cafe.
Killerton offers a blend of history, festive fun, and beautiful scenery for a perfect winter day trip.
Kents Cavern
Experience the magic of Christmas with “Santa in the Caves” at Kents Cavern in Torquay.
This unique event features an interactive pantomime as you journey through the beautifully decorated caves, meeting festive characters along the way.
You can also visit Santa’s Grotto, where children receive a special gift and adults enjoy mulled wine and mince pies.
The event also includes Christmas craft activities in the Stone Age Zone and a festive woodland trail.
This would be a lovely day out for the whole family around Christmas time.
