BYD Dolphin UK Review: Unleashing the Future of Urban Mobility

In this comprehensive review, we’ll dive deep into the features, performance, and overall appeal of the BYD Dolphin.

The Dolphin is available in four trim levels: Active, Boost, Comfort and Design.

The BYD Dolphin boasts a sleek and modern design that seamlessly combines aesthetics with functionality.

Its compact size makes it ideal for urban commuting, while the distinctive dolphin-inspired curves give it a unique and futuristic appearance.

The streamlined body not only enhances aerodynamics but also contributes to the car’s overall efficiency.

The front grille, adorned with the BYD logo, adds a touch of sophistication, while the LED headlights and taillights not only illuminate the road but also contribute to the car’s eco-friendly image. The lights were also inspired by the motion of dolphins breaching out of the ocean.

You can also enjoy rear privacy glass and a panoramic roof with the range topping Design spec.

Step inside the BYD Dolphin, and you’ll be greeted by a thoughtfully designed interior that prioritises comfort and convenience.

The spacious cabin, despite the car’s compact size, provides ample legroom and headspace for both the driver and passengers. The seats and multi-function steering wheel are made from vegan leather creating a cosy feel.

There are a good range of colour options to choose from:

  • Amethyst purple.
  • Coral pink.
  • Cream white.
  • Urban grey.

But if you opt for the top-of-the-line Design trim, you can choose from the following two-tone colours only:

  • Coral pink and Urban grey.

There are several different alloy wheel options depending on which trim level you choose:

The BYD Dolphin’s rivals include the MG4 EV, the Peugeot e-208, and the Vauxhall Corsa Electric. With such well-established electric car rivals, the BYD Dolphin is up against some hefty competition.

Under the hood, the BYD Dolphin packs a punch with its advanced electric powertrain. The Dolphin’s electric motor delivers a smooth and quiet driving experience, making it an ideal companion for city dwellers seeking a stress-free commute.

It handles speed bumps well and the acceleration is responsive, allowing the Dolphin to navigate urban traffic with ease and pack a punch on motorways too.

There are two options for regenerative braking: high and standard. This feature not only extends the range but also contributes to the overall sustainability of the vehicle.

The car is equipped with the infamous Blade Battery, providing decent range per charge. The lower Active and Boost trim levels come with a 44.9kWh battery, offering 211 and 192 miles of range respectively.

But if you go for the Comfort or Design trims, drivers benefit from a 60.4kWh battery, offering both models 265 miles of range.

BYD understands the importance of convenient charging for EV owners, and the Dolphin doesn’t disappoint in this aspect.

The hatchback supports fast-charging technology, allowing users to recharge the battery quickly and efficiently. Whether at home, the office, or public charging stations, the BYD Dolphin offers versatility and adaptability to various charging scenarios, making it a practical choice for individuals with a dynamic lifestyle.

When using a 60kW DC fast charger, it takes just 28 mins to charge from 30-80% on the Active and Boost trims. Or for the Comfort and Design trims, if using an 88kW DC fast charger, you’ll need just 29 minutes of your time to charge 30-80%.

The rotatable touchscreen features a user-friendly interface, integrating a touchscreen infotainment system that includes navigation, entertainment, and connectivity options.

Additionally, the BYD Dolphin features advanced driver-assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control and a 360o camera, adding an extra layer of convenience and safety.

With a 5-star safety Euro NCAP rating, the BYD Dolphin is equipped with advanced safety features, such as Blind Spot Detection, lane departure warnings, and predictive collision warnings, ensuring the well-being of its occupants.

There’s also two ISOFIX points in the back and 1 in the front passenger seat to ensure the safety of your family.

The BYD Dolphin also comes with the Vehicle to Load (VtoL) function on all trim levels, allowing you to power devices. If you’re off camping for the weekend with the family, yor EV will be able to power your kettle or cooking appliances.

There’s 345 litres of boot space to play with, but if you have more cargo than you do people, then you can drop the rear seats and open up 1,310 litres of space.

And thanks to the e-platform 3.0, rear passengers benefit from more space in the back due to the flat floor.

Storage space is plentiful too, there’s large door pockets, a pair of cup holders, a glovebox and little cubbies throughout the cabin – including a hollow storage tray underneath the touchscreen display.
