BYD’s SUV vs Volkswagen’s smallest electric car: which is worth it?
In this electrifying showdown, we pit two contenders against each other: BYD’s first UK model, the BYD ATTO 3 and the Volkswagen ID.3, an all-electric hatchback.
Despite belonging to different segments, these vehicles are comparably priced, making them intriguing options for eco-conscious drivers.

Model details
The BYD ATTO 3 is a compact SUV designed to cater to urban adventurers seeking versatility without compromising on sustainability. Boasting a spacious interior and rugged capabilities, it aims to redefine the EV SUV segment.
On the other hand, the Volkswagen ID.3 is a compact hatchback that embodies Volkswagen’s commitment to electrification. With its sleek design and advanced features, it promises a seamless transition to electric mobility.
The ATTO 3 has two trim levels on offer, the Comfort and Design. You may have heard about the Active trim level which is available in Europe but not in the UK at the moment.
The Volkswagen ID.3 has four different trim levels to choose from: Pro Essential, Pro Match, Pro S Essential and Pro S Match.
Design and Interior
The ATTO 3 exudes a robust yet refined aesthetic, featuring clean lines and bold contours that accentuate its SUV persona. The LED headlights and tail lights utilise and continuous light strip design.
Inside, passengers are greeted with a modern and ergonomic cabin, adorned with premium materials and intuitive controls.
There are some quirky design features, you get guitar string door bins and door handles that don’t look like door handles. The interior has been inspired by the gym as air vents are meant to look like weights on a dumbbell and the arm rest looks a bit like a treadmill.
In contrast, the ID.3 showcases Volkswagen’s signature design language, characterised by a minimalist exterior and a futuristic interior. No animal-based materials are used inside, so you get a mixture of cloth, faux suede and fake leather which give a high quality feel but are also eco-friendly.
In terms of colour options, the BYD ATTO 3 is available in Surfing Blue, Parkour Red, Exploring Green, Skiing White, and Climbing Grey. You can choose any of these at no extra cost.
The Volkswagen ID.3 has Costa Azule, Glacier White, Grenadilla Black, Scale Silver, and Moonstone Grey. Or if you want something that’ll stand out a bit more, you can opt for either Dark Olivine Green or Kings Red for an extra £885.
Technology and safety features
Equipped with advanced safety features and intuitive infotainment, the ATTO 3 prioritises both driver convenience and passenger security. While not as flashy as some competitors, it delivers a robust technological package.

Drive
The ATTO 3’s electric drivetrain delivers instantaneous torque, ensuring responsive acceleration and nimble maneuverability, especially in urban environments.
It can get from 0-60mph in 7.3 seconds and the ATTO 3’s regenerative braking system has just two levels which makes things nice and simple.
Meanwhile, the ID.3 offers a dynamic driving experience with precise steering and agile handling, making it a joy to navigate through city streets and winding roads alike.
Acceleration figures are 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds on the two lower trims, and 7.9 seconds on the two highest. So the BYD ATTO 3 wins here but not by enough to really notice.
Electric range and charging
The BYD ATTO 3 has a claimed WLTP combined range of up to 260 miles and when using a 150kW DC charger, you can get from 30-80% in just 29 minutes.
But if you’re charging at home, you’ll probably be using a typical 11kW 3-phase charger which will get you from 0-100% in 6hrs 30mins.
So you can pop it on charge overnight and wake up to a fully charged car!
Range is different on each Volkswagen ID.3 trim level, the entry level trim, Pro Essential, gets you 270 miles of range, and the Pro Match gives you just slightly lower with 268 miles. Pro S Essential gives you an impressive 356 miles and in the top spec Pro S Match, you get 349 miles of range.
The Volkswagen ID.3 wins here if you opt for one of the more expensive trim levels, but you’re probably not going to do more than 80 miles on a long journey before stopping some place where you could top up a bit of charge.
A 260 mile range is more than enough to get you where you need to be on a normal day, but this is all down to personal preference too.
Space and practicality
Despite their differing body styles, both vehicles excel in terms of space and practicality.
The ATTO 3’s SUV architecture provides ample room for passengers and cargo, making it an ideal choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
It has 440 litres of boot space which is pretty impressive and it has foldable rear seats in a 60/40 arrangement which further enhances versatility, allowing for transporting larger items with ease.
Despite its compact dimensions, the ID.3 offers a surprisingly roomy cabin with versatile seating arrangements, offering generous legroom and storage solutions for everyday needs. You get 385 litres of boot space and like the ATTO 3, you get 60/40 split rear seats.
Prices
Prices for the BYD ATTO 3 start at £37,695 for the Comfort Trim and rise to £39,695 for the Design trim.
Prices for the Volkswagen ID.3 start at £35,700 for the entry level trim and rise to £40,050 for the top of the spec trim.
So prices are on a pretty similar level, but remember to bear in mind that the BYD ATTO 3 is an SUV and the Volkswagen ID.3 is a hatchback.
