Winter Essentials for your Van

We’ve collated a list of essential items that you should pack in your van this Winter. The colder season means trickier, and sometimes dangerous, driving conditions. To avoid any issues, we recommend making extra preparations for driving on the roads around the South West this Winter.

De-icer and Ice Scraper

It’s imperative that you have a clear view before setting off on any journey. The frosty Winter mornings mean checking your windscreen and removing any ice, frost or residue. This could also include any grit that you’ve picked up from the roads the day before. Ensuring you have de-icer and a scraper in your van means you can remove anything you need to before you hit the roads across Somerset, Devon or Cornwall.

Naturally, you can also use the heating system in your van to speed up the process and, if you have the Winter Package (available on selected Mercedes-Benz Vans), take advantage of the Pre-Entry Climate Control feature.

It’s important that you don’t use boiling water to remove any ice, as this can break or crack your windscreen and alternative items used to scrape the screen can cause scratches.

First Aid Kit

If you’re driving a new Mercedes-Benz van, you will mostly likely have a First Aid Kit issued as part of your standard safety equipment. Other brands, including MAXUS, may not include this as standard, so it’s important to ensure you have this essential item in your van. This can be useful if you’ve picked up any cuts or burns whilst de-icing your light commercial vehicle.

High Vis Jacket and Warning Triangle

Those of you working in construction, logistics or the emergency services probably wear a Hi-Vis jacket as part of your required uniform. However, if this isn’t a usual part of your workwear, it’s a great addition to add to your winter essentials list, especially if you’re dealing with any roadside issues during the darker months. Visibility is essential to keep you, and other road users, safe.

Check your Breakdown Assistance is up to date

Don’t get caught out by the roadside. If you experience a flat tyre or red warning light on your van’s dashboard, you may need to call for breakdown assistance. The good news is, both Mercedes-Benz and MAXUS vans supplied by City West Country Vans include complimentary breakdown cover, covering all of the South West, and beyond. You can find more information on your level of cover here:

Service your van when required

Servicing your van regularly ensures that our expert technicians in Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth and Truro have checked and measured your tyres, brakes and other essential items, to keep you moving safely this winter. Regular servicing with an approved retailer can also extend your breakdown cover.

Plenty of Fuel or Charge

We may be stating the obvious here, but your van will be working harder during cold seasons, which can have an impact on your fuel efficiency or use more charge. If you have a long journey ahead, we recommend ensuring you have adequate stops planned for fuelling or charging. Your van’s Navigation system can help you with this.

Keep your Mobile Phone Charged

Keeping a phone charger in your van for making essential calls will avoid you being stuck in tricky situations this winter. The good news is, the new eCitan and Sprinter offer optional Wireless Charging, available with compatible smartphones.

If you would like to enquire on our new or Approved vans, or if you need to book your next service with one of our teams in Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth or Truro, our expert City West Country Vans team is available on 0330 173 1697.
